Apples and Oranges

A random observation…

Apples and Oranges, those are two different things. Both are fruits, but could be just as sweet, but apples are not oranges, and oranges are not apples.

I’m not actually here to talk about Apples and Oranges but rather, people. So our significant other may not like us back, and we turn to our friends bawling our eyes out, or go feasting on tubs of ice-cream or burning extra calories at the gym, I don’t know; but I do know that sometimes, not always, we wonder, were we not good enough? Why didn’t he/she like me back? And yes it is a sad truth, not everyone that we like will like us back, and that’s just simply how it works. I mean we come to the conclusion to suck it up and move on, like someone else or curse the female/male race forever and vow to never love again.

So I’ve had a similar experience; I remember finding out that my crush likes my best friend (ouch) which left me kind of heart broken. These things happen, it’s natural. My BFF is a lovely girl, she’s lovely, sweet, kind, genuine, down to earth, kind of crazy (in a good way), unique… I could go on, but to sum things up, she’s awesome. It’s no surprise this guy will like her. But I wondered, why not me? Is there something wrong with me, is it because I was too tall, did I dress weird? I mean I’m not that bad, why not consider me? Hello, I’m the one over here that had a sign that screams pick me! (Ok I’m not that desperate, but you get the picture).

And the thought struck me, perhaps I wasn’t an apple, I was an orange. It sounds kind of weird but both fruits are delicious in their own way. Apples are juicy, crunchy and every time you bite into them they let out a satisfying crackle as you munch away. Oranges are luscious and easy to bite, a tough exterior but a soft pulpy centre. Once you get past their coat they’re amazingly sweet. Both fruits are lovely in their own way. Given sometimes there are rotten apples and decaying oranges, but both apples and oranges are sweet. The thing is, they’re different, and that is why some people prefer apples and not oranges and sometimes both. Sometimes we’re in the mood for a crunchy apple, sometimes we just want to drink the endless flow of syrupy juice the orange provides. Everyone has a different preference. Just because someone chooses the apple, doesn’t mean the orange is any less sweet or tasty. It’s just that some people prefer the charm of an apple and not an orange and vice versa.

So I came to the conclusion, sometimes there isn’t anything wrong with us, or the person nibbling on their choice of fruit; it’s just the matter of preference, and maybe we’ll find someone who picks the “right” fruit.

Until next time, keep loving yourself
